PORTER COUNTY COMMISSIONER BOB HARPER
Bob is a life long Hoosier.
As a youth he was active in 4-H.
He graduated from Ball State with a Bachelor of Science and a license to teach in 1963.
He taught two years at Myers Elementary School in Portage.
He is a graduate of Valparaiso University School of Law.
He was elected Portage City Judge in 1971.
In 1974 he was elected Porter County Prosecutor. During his term, the Prosecutor's Office had a 100 percent conviction record in seven murder cases. Many of the programs instituted during his term are still used today.
Upon leaving the prosecutor's Office he became involved in the private practice of law in Porter County and has remained in private practice ever since.
He was appointed County Commissioner in November 2003 and continues to serve as commissioner for the Center District.
In the two years that Commissioner Bob Harper has been in office, he has been able to achieve many of his goals directed toward the quality of life in Porter County.
- Was able to get an ordinance passed that required all future subdivisions in the county to set aside a percentage of green space for either parks or recreational activity.
- Was able to get an ordinance passed that required the companies that pick up trash in Porter County to offer recycling services.
- Formed a committee and started working on improving services at the Animal Shelter and especially in trying to reduce the number of animals that are euthanized each year. The committee has been active in fund raising and helping to improve the shelter.
- Proposed and was able to get passed an unsafe building ordinance in Porter County.
- Has worked to ensure passage of a comprehensive zoning ordinance for Porter County that would require strict controls on future building in the county to ensure that we maintain our rural atmosphere.
- Proposed and was able to get passed a soil erosion ordinance.
- Has put a committee together to work together with the Plan Commission to help develop a strategic plan for all the commercial corridors in Porter County.
BOB HARPER WILL CONTINUE TO WORK FOR THE PEOPLE AND THE NEEDS OF PORTER COUNTY.
